The first treasure here is the dramatic coastal scenery. The second treasure is the peace and quiet.
Monks first came here in the 13th Century, inspired by the vast sands of Morecambe Bay. Later the Duke of Devonshire followed their example and built Holker Hall, the Peninsulas’ premier stately home.
The Furness Peninsula has a diverse offering. From the hustle and bustle of the maritime town of Barrow-in-Furness to the cobbled streets, ginnels and cosy pubs of Ulverston, a vibrant festival town. The Cartmel Peninsula is as beautiful and quiet as it is full of character and charm. Explore the internationally renowned nature reserve on Walney Island, or enjoy the splendour of Grange-over-Sands, a famous resort town down the road from Humphrey Head, where the last wolf in England was killed. Visit the remote, unspoilt Duddon Valley, the jewel in the crown of Cumbria.
