Lying snugly between the magic of the southern lakes and the beauty of the Yorkshire Dales, Sedbergh and Kirkby Lonsdale are real treasures simply because they’re two of the prettiest towns you’re ever likely to see. Prepare to be moved.

Elegant Georgian houses and pretty little cottages line the streets; every corner turned reveals charming secrets. Against this is a backdrop of truly inspirational countryside. The poet Ruskin was moved to write about this part of the world, “I do not know in all my own country, still less France or Italy, a place more naturally divine.” And he’s in good company. Constable and Turner both painted around the Lune River, which flows right through Kirkby Lonsdale. In the spring and summer the lovely town comes to life with “Britain In Bloom”, when all of the flowers in their tens of thousands come out.

This is the treasure of Cumbria. This is the magic of Cumbria. You should come.

The hills of Sedbergh   Sedbergh, beautiful and old, is within Cumbria, even though it is still part of the Yorkshire Dales. It’s probably most famous for its school, which was founded in 1525 and still thrives, boasting among its old boys Will Carling and Will Greenwood, the English rugby players. A short drive from there you can hop on the famous Settle-Carlisle Railway, the most scenic in Britain, which passes through Garsdale and Dent. The nearby Howgills offer some of the most undiscovered hillwalking in England.
