This is where you come to get away from it all, the land where the hills meet the sea. Peaceful, yet astounding. Wordsworth was born here. It’s not surprising the treasure of these lands inspire poetry in us all.

Test your nerves by driving up Hardknott Pass, the steepest road in Europe and visit the Roman fort at the top. The magical countryside and the drive down is just as thrilling.

The Western Lake District is home to world-class climbing. In the late 19th Century, it was on the fells of Wasdale that the sport of rock climbing developed. The fells around Ennerdale, Eskdale and Buttermere also offer unrivalled fell walking opportunities. Bring your binoculars to watch the birds and the magnificent sunsets off the Solway Coast, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Another treasure is Caldbeck, one of the prettiest villages anywhere.

Whitehaven Port at night   The Georgian port of Whitehaven was, interestingly enough, one of the world’s largest ports in the 18th Century. The first US President, George Washington, has a memorial to his grandmother in St. Nicholas’ Church, which boasts an amazing garden. Witness the Tall Ships and the air show at the biennial Whitehaven Maritime Festival.
